Lot Essay
Colley Shorter was overseas salesman for Wilkinson's from 1907 onwards and staged tradeshows in his territories. In 1926 he took this Tibetan Ginger jar, and a large vase (now in the collection of the Wedgwood Museum) to a tradeshow in Philadelphia, from which it still bears the remnants of the exhibition label. This example of Tibetan was decorated in best gold by Clarice whilst working as John Butler's apprentice. She intricately outlined all the lustre runnings and floral motifs. She was allowed to hand sign the base in gold because of the quality of her work. The ginger jar is one of the few pieces of her work that Clarice Cliff and Colley Shorter retained throughout their lives. It remained at Chetwynd House until her death in 1972.
