Lot Essay

According to an old label on the reverse, the view is of Lake Garda.
In 1897, on his last visit to Italy, Thoma stayed with Henry Thode near Lake Garda. Thode was a well-known art historian, a director of the Stadel in Frankfurt and one of Thoma's most important supporters, writing his catalogue raisonné in 1909.

In 1899, Thoma was made director of the Grossherzogliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe as well as Professor for landscape painting at the Kunstschule. Thoma made numerous sketches on his travels, which he used when working on his oil paintings in his studio. This capriccio view of Lake Garda has been embellished with imaginary elements.
