Besides producing high-quality classical furniture, the Amsterdam firm 't Woonhuys specialized in Amsterdam School furniture from artists like the celebrated architect Michel de Klerk.
Hildo Krop worked as a sculptor for the City of Amsterdam from 1916 onwards, of which many monumental sculptures on Amsterdam buildings and bridges still bear witness. Besides his work for the municipality, Krop also designed furniture for 't Woonhuys. His designs can be recognised by the expressionist Amsterdam School-type of carvings, mostly as accents on the framework of the furniture. The abstract linear carvings on the present lot seem to be inspired by the work of Willem Rädecker.
