In the present painting, Clairin draws direct inspiration from Japanese art in both subject matter, costume and composition as in two other paintings, Japonaise de théâtre and Portrait d'une actrice Japonaise. The vogue for all things Japanese was very strong in the late 19th century, originating in the opening of Japan to foreign trade that had begun as early as 1862. Boutiques such as M. Desoye at 220 rue de Rivoli or the Bing Gallery on the rue de Provence provided artists and amateurs alike with works of art and prints from the Far East. At the Exposition Universelle of 1878 the Japanese pavilion literally sold out and French companies such as Gallé began incorporating the 'new Japanese style' in their wares.
