Two pieces 1838-1840, blue printed decorating marks, iron-red marks for the chateau de Fontainbleau, the balance of the service later copies made by a Limoges factory, most pieces bearing spurious Sèvres marks, the manufacturer's mark over-gilt with a vase
The two footed bowls made for the chateau de Fontainbleau, the center gilt with a rosette, the border decorated between a stylized gilt Greek Key pattern and a gilt line rim with a band of animals perched within rich foliate scrolls and iron-red ground cartouches of animals and of the initials LP en grisaille within gilt foliate scrolls, comprising:
A Sèvres footed compote (jatte à fruits 'Cassolette'), 6¼in. (15.8cm.) high; 93/8in. (23.8cm.) diameter
A Sèvres footed fruit bowl (jatte à fruits hémisphériques, 2ème grandeur), 5¼in. (13.3cm.) high; 83/8in. (21.3cm.) diameter
Twelve dinner plates, 10in. (25.4cm.) diameter
Sixteen salad plates, 81/3in. (21.2cm.) diameter
Seventeen dessert plates, 77/8in. (20cm.) diameter

Lot Essay

The two footed fruit bowls in the present assembled service are from the original service of over 2,000 pieces ordered by King Louis-Philippe on 26 June 1835. The decoration in the style of medieval manuscripts is based on drawings by Jean-Charles François Leloy.
