The first mei: Kanezane with a seal Sho in cherry blossom form and another seal of Zane and dated Showa jurokunen haru (1941), the second, mei: Esaka Yoshikuni saku, 20th Century
The blade honzukuri, iorimune, o-gissaki, torii-zori, forging pattern nashiji, tempered edge ko-gunome midare of nie, ko-maru boshi, tang ubu, 67cm., encased in a typical military mounts, the hilt kabutogane with a name Kokushi, leather covered scabbard; the blade honzukuri, iorimune, chu-gissaki with torii-zori, forging pattern nashiji, tempered edge gunome to the omote and togariba to the ura with nie and nioi with ashi, maru-boshi, tang ubu, 66.3cm.; encased in copper military mounts, the hilt kabutogane with silvered mon of plum (umebachi) possibly Sugawara, Maeda or Matsudaira family (2)

Lot Essay

A copy of a letter from Seki in Gifu prefecture dated 25th September, 1975, for the first sword states that Kanezane was still alive, aged 65 running a foundry making kitchen knives and flat irons with his son. Kanezane was born on the 19th of December, 1910 and his name then was Shinichi Asano. He said that in his Golden Age, he received many prizes in the All Japan sword contest.
