Lot Essay

In 1921, Utrillo left Paris to join family friends in the Lyonnaise countryside. Several years thereafter, in 1924, his family acquired the Château de Saint-Bernard, near Lyon. The surrounding landscape would become a favorite subject for the artist, who resided in the area until he married Lucie Pauwels in 1935 and returned to Paris.
