Lot Essay

The Comité Chagall has confirmed the authenticity of this gouache.

The present gouache is one of five or six gouaches of churches in the Savoy region of the French Alps which Chagall painted during the winter of 1927-1928. Chagall used the title L'ange peintre in reference to this painting in a letter he wrote in 1950 to the family of the present owner.
