A TANTO IN A LACQUER BAMBOO SCABBARD
Mei, Norimitsu, 17th Century
The blade hirazukuri with a carving of carp leaping a waterfall to the omote and double grooves to the ura, slight uchizori, forging pattern itame with masame with tempered edge with ko-midare with kaeri boshi, tang machi-okuri with four holes, 23cm.; encased in an aikuchi koshirae of bamboo, scabbard partly lacquered brown, shakudo nanako fittings of kojiri, kashira, kurikata and fuchi en suite decorated with flowers representing the seasons in takazogan, the koiguchi and fuchi signed Akishige, shakudo koiguchi formed as a piece of bamboo decorated with bamboo leaves and a snail in takazogan, a baleen bound tsuka fitted with a large shakudo ornament formed as a peony and leaves, a scabbard ornament formed as plum blossom on a branch and a shakudo nanako kozuka depicting a grazing horse, with signature Imai Nagatake
