Lot Essay

The present picture is based on a photograph by Elliott and Fry in the National Portrait Gallery, London.

Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881), essayist and historian, was born in Ecclefechan, Dumfriesshire, and studied at Edinburgh University, teaching there for several years before writing articles for the Edinburgh Encyclopedia and the Edinburgh Review. He became absorbed with German literature, especially Goethe. On his move to Cheyne Row, London, he wrote 'The French Revolution' published in 1837, which made his reputation.
