Lot Essay

The wife of the established artist G.F. Watts, Mary Seton Watts started a school of decorative terracotta work in the village of Compton, near Guilford in 1895. The school was organised to produce terracotta decoration for a cemetary chapel that was completed the following year and continued to produce commercial pieces. The factory as well as producing architectural planters, produced a range of sculptual figures of saints and arch-angels that were painted in tempera
