Lot Essay

Stanley Thorogood (1873-1953) designed this impressive figure originally for the 1919 Royal Academy exhibition, and kept an example of it in his collection. The design of the figure group was inspired by the book illustrations of Ducourtioux et Huillard who produced wood engravings for Boutet de Monvel's Jeanne d'Arc published in 1896 that was in Thorogood's possession from 1898. Stanley Thorogood's version was donated to the Victoria & Albert Museum (VA. C10:1-3 1993).
