Lot Essay

John Hardman Junior produced Gothic inspired designs by various respected artists including his friend Augustus Wellaby Pugin (1812-1852) and also William Burges. This beaker shares similarities to a beaker designed by Pugin and produced by John Hardman in 1850, with its combination of materials and decoration with enamelled monogram panels and etched decoration. It was probably designed by John Hardman Junior's nephew John Hardman Powell who trained under Pugin and took over the role of senior designer circa 1850 - becoming chief designer on Pugin's death.
