The Maharaja Jam Sahib of Nawanagar, or Ranjitsinhji', was better known to the cricketing world as 'Ranji'. 'Ranji learnt his early cricket in India from a Cambridge man, later went to that University, became one of the most handsome of stroke players and, in 1896, with the agreement of the Australians, played the first of his games for England in the Manchester Test.
