Grace's testimonial followed two remarkable records in his career. The first was achieving 100 centuries, whiich he did on 17 May 1895, for Gloucestershire against Somerset, at Bristol. In the same month, with one match to play, Grace's total was 847 runs. He achieved his record of 1,000 runs in a month, appropriately enough at Lords, against Middlesex. To mark these two milestones the daily Telegraph launched a national testimonial for Grace, using its readers to donate a shilling each to a great man. Contributions also came from the British Medical Journal, the MCC, Gloucestershire members, making a final total of over ...£9,000, worth the equivalent of ...£250,000 today, see, Robert Low W.G., A life of W.G.Grace, 1997
