Melbourne 1956, heavy lead crystal faceted vase, oval panel deep-etched with the figure of a sprinter 'on his marks', 22 cm high, 13.5 cm diam, original simulated morocco blue cloth presentation pedestal box, metal clasps (one defective), cream satin-lined doors opening to reveal blue velvet interior with recess for the vase, Olympics 1956 coloured label at head of box, 32 cm high; Set of 6 crystal glass tumblers, each deep-etched with the figure of an athlete (male & female sprinters, tennis, netball, skiing), each 8.5 cm high, 8.5 cm diam., contained in original simulated morocco blue cloth presentation box, metal clasps, cream satin-lined lid opening to reveal purple velvet lined interior with recess for tumblers, Olympics 1956 coloured label on lid, 26 x 35 x 11 cm
Presented to Frank Chamberlain, one of the original members of Embassy Taxis of Melbourne in appreciation of services during the games. The company, formed by a group of private operators, was initially known as 'Embassy Private Hire Service' for weddings. The vehicles were modern and luxurious and their drivers had a thorough knowledge of Melbourne. The organising committee of the games commissioned the car operators to act as chauffeurs for VIP visitors to the games at £15 a day, see illustration
