SHANE GOULD 1970-1974, collection of 4 swimmers training log books, and a scrap album 1966-1968
The first three of the log books, all printed for the Forbes & Ursula Carlisle Swimming Organisation are a day-to-day detail of events in the life of Shane Gould, Sunday to Saturday, every week, from 16 June 1970-2 April 1972, and constitute a fascinating insight into the narrow, regimented, strictly dedicated life an elite athlete followed in order to obtain the Holy Grail of an Olympic Games- a gold medal. Indeed, the first advert in the book is 'Murin for your eyes...Gold Medal, Sore Eyes....such is the price of fame'. The log books are filled in on a daily basis with details of weight, height, miles swum am and pm, 'other exercises', study and homework, sleep, general diary, details of times made in training, with coach's (Forbes Carlisle's) comments on week '22nd Nov 1970...My birthday today! 14...my arms are a bit sore. At school I felt weak and hot at 11am- went to clinic and slept for 40 mins! [Carlisle's comments] I think you may be a little overweight....'. The Third log book, additionally printed 'confidential, not to be read by other than parents and coach' contains a secton for 'Parents comments and requests' 8 August 1971 Shane's father's comment 'school work has suffered badly- study must take precedence in last term'- a portent of things to come. The fourth log book, April 1973 to March 1974, covers Gould's period under the American Nort Thornton at Foothill Aquatic Club, California, immediately before her retirement; the scrap album dated 1966-1968 contains newspaper cuttings, printed results and manuscript tabular results (5)
