He established his presence from the beginning playing on the wing for the opening game of the season. He had a style of playing on, which was ahead of its time. Sturdily built and fast, he was a brilliant high mark for his size, becoming a master centreman, half-forward and rover. Matthews was one of thee best in the forward pocket in his team's flag win of 1933 and in successive Grand Final losses. He was voted third in the Brownlow medal in 1936 and second in 1937. Then in 1940 he was awarded a record 32 votes in a tie with Des Fothergill of Collingwood. In 1941 Matthews came second in the Brownlow again. Matthew's last match was the infamous 1945 Grand Final 'Bloodbath', during which he was reported for throwing the ball away after a free kick had been awarded against him. This so shocked Matthews , known as 'Mr Clean', that he retired immediately. He had been captain coach for eight seasons from 1938 to 1945. In 1945 he was captain, and came back as non-playing from 1954 to 1957. His record with South Melbourne includes 188 games and 17 goals, six Victorian representative games, 5 Club Best and Fairest trophies, 116 Brownlow votes and a Brownlow medal. Haydn Bunton named Herbie Matthews as his best ever footballer
