Lot Essay

The new era of opulence and post-war euphoria was accompanied by the return of extravagant evening functions, and a clear delineation between jewels worn during the day and those reserved for night-time festivities. Formal diamond parures reigned supreme. De Beers' "Diamond International Awards", first founded in 1954, stimulated creativity and innovation in contemporary designs, as jewellery blossomed into delicate loops and curls. Different diamond cuts were used together to create swirls and twirls, fans, volutes, waterfalls and cascades. The rod-shaped baguette, beloved of the Art Deco jewellers, was enormously popular once again, now incorporated into the new curvaceous patterns. Typically mounted in platinum or white gold channel settings, they created smooth, fluid lines, sometimes fringed by pear- or marquise-shaped diamonds as a trim. Traditional rivières were thus transformed into flowing designs with names such as pluie or cascade, alluding to this typical waterfall of diamonds effect.
