Lot Essay

Although this enamel has been traditionally identified as Sir Robert Walpole, 1st Earl of Orford it does not compare to the enamel of him by Christian Friedrich Zincke in the Gilbert Collection (see S. Coffin/B. Hofstetter, The Gilbert Collection. Portrait Miniatures in Enamel, London, 2000, no. 75, illustrated in colour p. 122).
