Sir Henry Vane Jr (1612-1662), a well-known leader of the Independents, was a M.P. for Hull. He was expelled from the House of Commons in 1653 by Cromwell whose friend he had been. He was beheaded for high-treason. An unsigned second version of this miniature, identified as Lodowicke Muggleton, the founder of the heretic Sect of Muggletonians (1609-1698), was subsequently in the Addington Collection (26 April 1883, lot 113), the Pierpont Morgan Collection (Christie's, London, 24 June 1935, lot 45), the S. H. V. Hickson Collection (Sotheby's, London, 29 March 1965, lot 40), sold Sotheby's, London, 26 November 1973, lot 74, then in the Edward Grosvenor Paine Collection (Sotheby's, London, 22 June 1981), and sold again Sotheby's, London, 4 December 1985, lot 188.
