Thomas Butler, eldest son of James, 1st Duke of Ormonde, was a fervent Royalist and accompanied King Charles II on his return to England in 1660. He was a deputy-governor of Ireland 1664-65 and 1668-69. His martial career began in 1666 when he fought in the Royal Charles. He became a knight of the Garter in 1672, a rear-admiral in 1673 and then commander-in-chief. He married Amelia of Nassau, eldest daughter of Henry of Nassau, Lord of Auverquerque, in 1659 and had issue.
