by Alexander James Strachan (fl. 1799 - c. 1850), marked, struck with the English duty mark for gold 1822-1834, the London assay office mark 1822-1897, London date letter 'k' for May 1825 - May 1826, the English post-1798 standard mark for 18ct. gold, and the English stardard mark for 18ct. gold 1798-1974
Rectangular box with wavy corners and slightly concave sides, the cover, sides and base engraved with wavy horizontal engine-turning forming a pattern of small peaked lozenges, the lid framed by a broad sablé band applied with boldly cast green gold foliate scrolls enbellished with flowers, the corners with four mirrored spandrels shaped as winged dragons with snake tails, polished gold rims, the thumbpiece cast as a crouching eagle flanked by scrolling foliage

Provenance
According to an inscription engraved at the inside of the lid: 'presented by the Officers of the 8th or the Kings Regiment, to Lieu.t Col.l John Duffy, their late commanding officer, as a Testimony of their esteem and friendship. 1828.'
