Charles, 3rd Duke of Richmond carried the sceptre with the dove at the Coronation of George III and was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary to the Court of France in 1765. In 1766 he was constituted Principal Secretary of State and in 1782 was appointed Master General of the Ordnance. He married Mary (d. 1796), youngest daughter and co-heir of 4th Earl of Elgin and 3rd Earl of Ailesbury in 1757. He was succeeded by his nephew Charles, 4th Duke of Richmond.
