The goldsmith Héguin (fl. 1785 - after 1812) was sponsored by Jean-Joseph Barrière (see preceding and following lots). The enamellist Thomas Seguin (1741 - after 1806) established himself in Paris in 1775 and exhibited several enamels at the Paris Salon of 1806. Only two enamels by his hand, the portrait of William Dorant of 1789 (Louvre) and the portrait of John Gregson (French private collection) were hitherto recorded. The present enamel is copied after Angelika Kaufmann's rectangular oil painting Paris and Helen Directing Cupid to Inflame each other's Hearts with Love exhibited at the R. A. in 1774 (illustrated in W. Wassyng Roworth, Angelica Kauffman, London, 1992, p. 85, fig. 72).
