Lot Essay

Graf Kaunitz was one of the Empress Maria Theresia's most trusted and able advisers. He was bestowed with the Order of the Golden Fleece in 1749 and was created a Prince in 1764. For further biographical details on this sitter, see A. Novotny, Staatskanzler Kaunitz, Vienna, 1947.
Another version of the present miniature was in the Robert D. Brewster Collection, New York, sold Sotheby's, Geneva, 15 November 1995, lot 274 and another portrait of him was in the Grand Dukes of Baden sale, Sotheby's, Baden-Baden, 9 October 1995, lot 1816.
