Lot Essay

Ercole III Rinaldo of Este (1727-1823), Duke of Modena, Reggio and Mirandola 1780-1803, Duke of Breisgau in 1801, married Princess Maria-Teresa of Cybo-Malaspina, the heiress of Massa and Carrara, in 1741. He participated in the war against Revolutionary France in 1793, was deposited by Napoleon in 1796 and abdicated in 1803 in favour of his son-in-law. In the present miniature, he is wearing the order of the Golden Fleece which he received in 1753.
