Lot Essay
Louis-Philippe II d'Orléans was the eldest son of Philippe-Egalité and his wife Princess Louise-Marie-Adélaïde of Bourbon-Penthièvre. He married Princess Marie-Amélie of Bourbon-Naples in 1809 in Palermo where the present miniature must have been painted. He was King of the French under the name of Louis-Philippe I from 1830 to 1848. He was an unpopular King and was given the nickname of La Poire ('The Pear') referring to his broadening jawline. After his abdication, he adopted the title of Comte de Neuilly and emigrated to England. For a miniature of his second son, the Duc de Nemours, see lot 257.
