Lot Essay

Frederick-Lewis, son of Grand Duke Frederick Francis I and his wife Louise of Saxe-Coburg married Grand Duchess Helena Pavlona of Russia in 1799. He married secondly, Princess Caroline of Saxe-Weimar (d. 1816) and thirdly, in 1818 Princess Augusta Frederika of Hessen-Homburg who survived her husband. The present miniature was painted in Russia where Collas worked between 1803 and 1811. Another version of the present miniature was sold in our Geneva rooms, 15 November 1994, lot 128.
