Lot Essay

Carlo Alberto, 7th Prince of Carignan, was Regent of the Kingdom of Sardinia for one week after the abdication of Vittorio Emanuele I in 1821, Viceroy of Sardinia in 1829 and King of Sardinia 1831-1849. He abdicated following his defeat by the Austrians in Novara in 1849. He married Maria Teresa, daughter of Ferdinando III, Grand Duke of Tuscany in 1817. A direct descendant of King Augustus the Strong, through his Saxon mother, he was one of the tallest men of his time.
