Heavy rectangular box with rounded corners, the cover inset with a rectangular translucent blue enamel panel on an engine-turned ground, applied with a concave polished gold cartouche with scrolling projections flanked by three-dimensional cast oak leaves and acorns, in the centre an oval translucent blue enamelled raised reserve enclosing a diamond-set letter 'K', within an old mine-cut diamond surround surmounted by a jewelled and red-enamelled Russian Imperial crown, further diamonds on left and right hand sides, outer cast leaf border, the sides and base engraved with trailing reeded foliage and strapwork, slightly raised thumbpiece

According to an inscription engraved at the inside of the cover 'presented to Henry F. Swan Esq.r by His Imperial Majesty The Emperor of Russia for services rendered in the construction of War Vessels. June 5th 1865.'

William Chapman entered his mark as a goldworker on 14 November 1859 from 14 Frith Street, Soho. He is known to have specialised in making regalia.
Henry F. Swan, a partner of Sir Armstrong Mitchell, shipbuilders on Tyneside, was celebrated for his invention of the oil tanker, a patent for which he filed in 1885. He also financed his brother C. S. Swan in founding the shipbuilding firm of Swan-Hunter.
