Lot Essay

This is a remarkably "minimalistic" Konya prayer rug. It is similar in structure and border to a small group of white ground Konya (or West Anatolian) prayer rugs dating from the eighteenth century (Christie's, London, 21 October 1993, lot 419; or Kirchheim, E.Heinrich et al..: Orient Stars, a Carpet Collection, Stuttgart and London, 1993, no.167). Another comparable rug to the present example is also in the Kirchheim Colection (op.cit., no.184).
