Lot Essay

The present large East Turkestan carpet has field which is very archaic in design. The elements found in the field, the inner and main borders are also found, in a slightly different combination, in the border of a carpet dating from the late Ming dynasty (Franses, Michael et al.: Lion Dogs, Hundred Antiques, Classical Chinese Carpets I, London, 2000, pl.2). This reliance on earlier forms is a feature of all Chinese art, and one that can make the dating of works of art particularly difficult.
