Lot Essay

As with so many carpets produced in the North West Persian region in the eighteenth century, the design of this rug derives originally from those of Kirman in the preceding century (Concaro, Edoardo and Levi, Alberto: Sovrani Tappeti, Milan, 1999, no.55, p.77; for example). A fragment of a carpet from seventeenth century North West Persia showing this design very close to the Kirman original, was with the Textile Gallery (Hali, 39, May-June 1988, p.98). The design was adopted for a small number of surviving kelleh carpets which can be attributed to Kurdish weavers in this region during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries (Thompson, Jon: Carpet Magic, exhibition catalogue, London, 1983, p.46; Christie's, London, 13 April 2000, lot 31).
