Lot Essay

The eight-pointed star within an octagon is one of the oldest forms in Turkish carpets, appearing from at least the 13th century. The present runner, like others in the yellow-ground Konya group, uses the juxtaposition of very strong blocks of colour and fleecy soft wool to create a very dramatic effect. Two fragments of slightly earlier runners with the same main ornamentation were formerly in the Kirchheim Collection (Kirchheim, E. Heinrich: Orient Stars, Stuttgart and London, 1993, nos. 141 and 142, p.216).
