He who lives in the spirit exists in the dimension of universality. There is a geometry that corresponds to this universality. And this is where order comes in. -- J.T.G. It was with an unparalleled commitment to abstraction and a wholehearted acceptance of modernity that Latin American Constructivism sought to derive formal and iconographical imagery from sources that transcended both geographical and cultural limitations. The consequences of such non-derivative ideals have propelled Constructivist art to be recognized as one of the truly avant-garde movements in Latin America.

Painted in 1932, Constructivo a doble línea en tierra de sombra belongs to the first generation of full-blown Constructivist works executed during the artist's Parisian period of 1924 to 1932. Stylistically, the work is a superior example of Constructivist execution and emphasis on universal idealism. While greatly indebted to Mondrian and Van Doesburgh, works painted during this early phase of stylistic maturity are characterized by their highly symbolic and sophisticated compositions. As an early investigation into the complex formal language of a purely Constructivist vocabulary, Constructivo a doble línea en tierra de sombra successfully incorporates the universal meaning that is today associated with this greatly idealistic era.
