Lot Essay
Jorge Luis Borges claimed that Xul Solar was the only cosmopolitan man he had ever met, a true citizen of the cosmos and as such, a true creator. Throughout his life, Xul devoted his time to the studies of philosophy, esoteric sciences, music, mathematics, astrology and linguistics. He composed music, painted and developed the languages of panlengua and neocriollo while spending his time playing panajedrez, a game of his own invention.
This particular lot brings together various elements of Xul's rich life. It is made out of game chips from the panajedrez, including some painted sticks that can be assembled to create cabalistic meaning and a wooden, articulated puppet. Together they represent a glimpse into the intimate world of the artist and his creative mind. Far beyond his painting, this grouping reflects the complexity of the panajedrez, where musical time, the zodiac, language and creativity intervene in creating the rules of the game. Likewise, the puppet further shows his interest in theatrical arts and their aesthetic origin in poetry, religion and myth.
