A German silver-mounted ivory and gem-set tankard
Apparently unmarked, circa 1870
Tapering cylindrical, on stepped oval, slightly domed foot, the foot set with a border of green gems, and chased with bands of husking, acanthus and rope-twist, the ivory body carved with a Bacchanalian frieze with goddesses and centaurs, the handle carved as a bacchante, the domed silver cover with floral thumbpiece, crimped edge and chased with foliate scrolls, the ivory finial formed as a bacchante, apparently unmarked
