A CIZHOU RECTANGULAR PILLOW
Jin/Yuan Dynasty, 12th-13th century
Painted in chocolate-brown on a creamy-white ground, the top depicting a sleeping scholar within a pavilion who has been robbed of a tiger skin by an armed figure running away within an ogival panel, the sides further decorated with peony and lotus within similar panels, each framed by a dense ground of flowers and foliage, the back inscribed Xiangdi Zhangjia zao and Aishan Zheng Yonggong, within rectangular columns, minor glaze loss to one corner
