Square forms became increasingly popular in the 16th century. A square dish with the same decoration as this bowl, but incised and with yellow and green enamels applied to the biscuit, is illustrated in Sekai Toji Zenshu, vol. 14, Ming, Tokyo, 1976, pls. 82 and 83.

Compare a similar bowl sold in these Rooms, 20 March 1990, lot 537.
