Lot Essay

It is unusual to find a doucai stemcup of this rare design featuring the ba jixiang, normally well-known in blue and white with lanca characters. Compare to a similar stemcup in the llustrated Catalogue of Ch'ing Dynasty Porcelain in the National Palace Museum, vol. II, Taipei, 1981, pl. 13.

It is also interesting to compare this stemcup to the colourful examples, although with lanca characters in place of the ba jixiang, made in cloisonné enamel during the Qianlong reign, for example the stemcup in the National Palace Museum, illustrated in Enamel Ware in the Ming and Ch'ing Dynasties, Taipei, 1999, no. 74.
