A WOOD HEAD OF THE BODHISATTVA AVALOKITESVARA
Ming dynasty (1368-1644)
Carved with downcast eyes, gently arching brows, fine nose and full lips lending the face a serene expression, the elaborate tiara carved in medium to high relief with a figure of the seated Buddha Amitabha flanked by foliate scrolls before the high top knot, the hair held back by the crown and reappearing below the long ear lobes, some gesso and pigment remaining the hair, age cracks and old chips

Lot Essay

This figure shares some facial features with figures of a slightly earlier date such as the 12th-13th century seated Avalokitesvara in the Nelson Gallery, Kansas City, illustrated in Sickman and Soper, The Art and Architecture of China, Harmondsworth, 1956, p. 79, and another in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, illustrated in the same volume, p. 76, pl. (A), as well as a Yuan dynasty figure from Shanxi illustrated in Zhongguo Meishu Quanji, vol. 6 Sculpture, p. 3, pl. 3.
