Each enamelled at the centre in green, iron-red, aubergine and turquoise with rockwork and large poppies, the everted rim decorated with three peony and prunus sprays, all reserved on a pale café-au-lait ground, rim chips and one crack

Lot Essay

A single plate of this unusual design is illustrated by R. L. Hobson, The Eumorfopoulos Collection, London, 1927, vol. V, pl. XXIII, fig. E119; on p. 18, the author describes the pale brown glaze as 'Nanking yellow' and explains that it is one of the many shades of brown glaze derived from iron.
