Lot Essay
Compare the small ribbed pudding mould in the Mottahedeh Collection, illustrated by D. Howard and J. Ayers, China for the West, 1978, vol. II, no. 598, where the authors explain that between 1775 and 1800 a limited number of European domestic shapes were copied in China, but were probably not a commerical success since only few examples are known. Compare the related pair of famille rose bowls in the Hodroff Collection, of circa 1780, with handles similar to those on the present lot but also with two pinched spouts, illustrated by D. S. Howard, The Choice of the Private Trader, London, 1994, p. 225, no. 265; and the slightly earlier dairy bowl decorated in underglaze blue with a river landscape, ibid., pp. 224 and 225, no. 264, where the author suggests its use may have been for skimming in a dairy or for use in cooking or eating.
