Lot Essay

The form and design of this dish is reminiscent of Japanese Kakiemon porcelain of the late seventeenth century, which due to its popularity in Europe was copied at Meissen in circa 1740, when the chinoiserie figures were possibly added. A slightly smaller but otherwise identical dish from the Mottahedeh Collection is illustrated by D. Howard and J. Ayers, China for the West, vol. II, London and New York, 1978, no. 546, pp. 534-535.
