Lot Essay

The rigorously geometrical style of Art Deco derives its name from the famous Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes held in Paris from April to October 1925. Famous Parisian jewellers such as Cartier, Mauboussin and Van Cleef & Arpels amongst others were much influenced by Howard Carter and Lord Caernarvon's discovery in 1922 of the tomb of Tutankhamen. Coloured gemstones such as turquoise and coral and coloured enamels served to inaugurate a passion for Egyptian decorative motifs such as scarabs, hieroglyphs and spread-winged falcons as in the above example.
