The carved decoration of this console, particularly of the frieze, is closely related to the printed furniture designs by François Roumier (d. 1748). Based in Paris since 1716, he was appointed sculpteur du Roi in 1721, and published numerous volumes of engraved designs such as Livre de plusieurs coins de bordures (1724) and Trophées (c.1725). The carving on the present table relates designs included in the former, and is illustrated in B. Pons, De Paris a Versailles 1699-1736, Les Sculpteurs ornemanistes Parisiens et l'art décoratif des Bâtiments du Roi, Strasbourg, 1986, figs. 439-444. A virtually identical table, possibly the present lot, is illustrated in a trade advertisement of J.M. Botibol in Connaisseur 9 (1947)
