Lot Essay

The pietra dura panels in the border of this table top, with figures in folk and exotic dress, are closely related to those which are incorporated in a number of Louis XVI items of furniture made by the celebrated ébiste Adam Weisweiler (maître in 1778). These include a cabinet in the Royal collection in the White Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace and a secretaire previously with Dalva Brothers, New York, which is illustrated in P. Lemonnier, Weisweiler, Paris, 1983, p. 69.
