Lot Essay

The first, Bamen Tsunemasa was a student or relative of Kikuchi Tsunekatsu. Their work is not similar but the character Tsune of their signatures is. Earlier scholars thought that he may have been a student of the Sunagawa family. An old document states that he was a horse-mask maker, but this has never been proven. They were certainly makers of helmets, guns and farming implements. Bamen lived in Echizen and the name was bestowed by Honda. Tsunemasa was an accomplished designer whose skilful sukashi work is closely connected with kage-e [shadow pictures].
