A FINELY MOUNTED WAKIZASHI
mei: Chikuzen Daijo Fuji Naotane and kao, dated Bunsei 12 Ushi nen (1829) Horu Yoshitane [carving by Yoshitane], the kojiri signed Jikan Ganbun, Edo Period (19th century)
The blade hirazukuri, iorimune, ko-itame hada with ji-nie, komidare hamon of ko-nie becoming o-midare with much sunagashi, the omote chiselled with a ken, the ura with gomabashi, rendai and a bonji, ubu nakago, 31.5cm.

In its fine saya lacquered to imitate bark; the kojiri of dark hardwood deeply carved to resemble the entrance to an ants' nest and applied in gold, copper, lead and other metals with ants, beetles and with two false repairs to the wood, the butt with a snail in pewter and horn, signed on the side oju Jikan Ganbun saku [made to order by Jikan Ganbun] and with a kao; the kurikata partly covered with rayskin and with ants applied in gold, shakudo and copper; a saya kanamono formed as a shibuichi frog, signed Jo; another kanamono below the uragawara formed as two gilt butterflies; the kozuka of wood carved with a dragonfly (the proboscis in lead, the eyes in shell, the legs in gilt metal) signed in incised characters on a plaque on the reverse Tatemiya; shibuichi ishimeji fuchi-kashira, the suface imitating rotting wood and inlaid with ants in various metals, and the aorigata tsuba similarly decorated, both inscribed Ichijo and kao; one menuki formed as a shakudo and gilt cicada signed with a kao, the other of lacquered wood with soft metal ants
